A music genre is a category (or genre) of pieces of music that share a certain style or “basic musical language” (van der Merwe 1989, p.3). Music may also be categorised by non-musical criteria such as geographical origin though a single geographical category will often include a wide variety of sub-genres

Over at Out Digital Music blog, they have started a series of blog entries to define the most commonly used terms revolving around digital music. Yesterday’s term was “AAC” and today’s term was “Bitrate“, for example. I highly recommend to anybody starting to collect digital music to follow this blog to get acquainted with the Digital Music lexicon.

One of the sites on my rss feed is http://aurgasm.us/. Each week, or so, they feature a new artist and a few mp3s by that artist. Recently, they featured a great female vocalist: Melody Gardot. Finding out about her made following this website worthwhile. I just listened to her two songs offered by this post: Goodnite and Worrisome Heart. Now, I must get all her songs.

Paul Lamere, is a researcher at Sun labs. More specifically, he is a music researcher at Sun labs. His latest focus involves music recommendation algorithms. He has an interesting challange for his readers: Which one of the following lists of music recommendations ,based on “Miles Davis” as a starting seed, was created by a music expert and which one was created by a computer algorithm. This is not a trivial questions – I think it can go either way.

A few weeks ago I wrote about my methods of discovering music. In this post, I described how mixsets are a golden source for discovering music. I just discovered a new blog that I would be adding to my feed reader for this purpose: DJ Magnet. Not only does he provide mixsets, but individual mashups, as well.
